Tackling Procrastination: Recognise the problems and break free

Updated: Oct 11

Procrastination is the act of delaying and delaying something until the last minute. Does that sound like you? Yeah? Well you would be surprised to know that 75% of college students deal with it and even more adults in their daily life. In this article, I will talk about this and hopefully help you understand how to help with it.

Remember that time where you didn’t want to get out of bed to do your homework? Or when you said you had a week to finish an assignment and did it last minute? Well some people are better at tackling complicated or annoying tasks than others and that’s ok everybody is different but procrastination needs to be approached one way or another.

Types of procrastination

Bet you didn't know there where more types of procrastination, well me neither until researching, so here are the the main types of procrastination :

Passive Procrastination means that they delay tasks because they have trouble making decisions. Active Procrastination means that they delay tasks on purpose to do them when they are under pressure due to feeling more motivated and work better under pressure. Perfectionist Procrastinators are those that delay tasks out of fear of not doing it perfectly. Finally, Dreamer Procrastinators delay tasks because they can't pay attention for too long.

Why do you procrastinate?

It is simply because you may not be in the mood to do the allocated task or just got into the habit of doing things last minute. There are lots of different reasons why people procrastinate and it tends to vary from person to person. Some examples are:: lack of motivation, lack of energy, low self-esteem, fear of failure or perfectionism.

How to overcome procrastination.

People learn in different ways but some tips to encourage you not to procrastinate are: promise yourself rewards for example rewarding yourself an ice cream after completing your assignments  Another way may be doing decomposing  tasks, say that you have to finish an assignment, you can do half of it then take a break before doing the other half. That way you may not feel as overwhelmed. The last thing that may help you is minimising distractions, find a location in which you focus the best, it may be a coffee shop, your room or in the park, whatever you find works most efficiently

Overall, I hope that this article has helped you understand a bit more about procrastination with the type of procrastinator you are and how to overcome it. Hope you will procrastinate less in the future!
